Kendrick Street

Private Residence

This project is for a visionary medical professional with an eye for details and fun ideas. The problem was getting it through the ever-difficult Historic District Commission. Because of all that he wanted, they said the whole property has to be invisible from the road. We created a 6′ high x 200′ long serpentine berm and planted it with trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses. The site sloped at about 3% from the front to the back, so we took full advantage by raising the front even more and dropping the back. This way the vanishing edge pool has a 4′ drop to the open lawn. The house is spectacular – designed by Chip Webster, with huge glass wall facing the pool terrace, spa, fire pit, and pool house. Getting all of this through the permitting was a challenge, but we succeeded. The client’s unique vision was realized through our collaborative planning, design, and implementation oversight, and it involved the whole diverse team of professionals.

Collaboration

Architects: Chip Webster Architects

General Contractor: MBuilt Inc.

Landscape Contractor: Grady Murtagh

Surveyor & Civil Engineer: Blackwell Associates

Total Project Cost: $978k

Glass all Glass

The pool’s end-wall is 4″-thick glass, and pool enclosure fence is glass too, allowing folks in the Jacuzzi spa to watch the swimmers, and to see the rest of the landscape unobstructed.

A 52' Vanishing Edge

People hanging on the upper pool deck look out over the water to the wonders of nature – and kids playing on the lawn.

Open Pool House

We integrated Chip Webster’s open pool house (with a fireplace and bar) to solidly embrace the edge of the property and enclose the separate spa and fire pit areas.

A Mounded Approach

The client wanted privacy, so we gave the driveway a broad sweeping curve that bisects a 6′ high mound covered with lovegrass. As the driveway slices through, stone retaining walls hold up the cut sides of the mound.

Key Vantage

The Jacuzzi spa (with views into the pool), Pool House, and Fire Pit sit at the lower level, just above the lawn. Upstairs is the main pool deck, dining and cooking area, and entry to the house. The client’s many compelling but competing program requirements on different levels required aesthetic innovation and technical expertise, and I think we have a winner.

Project Lead

David Bartsch

Very difficult project. David was creative, reliable, and technically expert. We did not get a second quote, David was it.
